CREEPY CLASSICS presents...

MOVIE NIGHTS

Every weekend we're watching movies together...whether you're in Pennsylvania USA, or Sydney Australia. It's a throwback! Back to the days when you had the anticipation for waiting till the weekend to see the classic horror or science fiction film that was listed in the TV Guide. The plan is to watch a movie at 7:30PM on Saturday night in your own time zone. Or, if you can't Saturday night...anytime during the weekend. Then, we'll all get together and e-mail our thoughts on the film...a few paragraphs...or simply a sentence if you'd like. They after-viewing reviews appear first on our Creepy Classics/Monster Bash News Page. See the latest thoughts posted by viewers ther now.

MOVIE OF THE WEEK: Saturday September 8, 2012 - MOVIE - Thriller "HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER" (1958). If you know about the history of classic make-up artist Jack Pierce...this could almost be his story! A great make-up man is kicked out of his studio. In this guy's case, though, he goes nuts and creates real monsters utilizing his TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN and TEENAGE WEREWOLF make-ups! Suggested by Kevin Walsh -  Syracuse, NY.

Hey Ron,

This movie is just too good, although I would like to have seen Michael
Landon as the werewolf again, Gary Clarke plays it off well, along w/
the TeenAge Frankenstein,Gary Conway (think they are both still w/us.
I like the color scene at the end, Robert Harris is simply diabolical, and
Paul Brinegar as Rivero is under his Svengali like control. Then we have
Morris Ankrum and Thomas B. Henry, Malcolm Atterbury, just plain good
old fashion classic entertainment!!

Hey Bash Synchers,

This was my first viewing of this flick. I had read over the years that it was a real stinker, most recently from Dr. Acula in old FMs, who blasted it mercilessly. Leonard Maltin gave it a bomb and I seem to recall Bill Warren hated it to in his encyclopedia of 50s Sci Fi Films. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it, I thought it was good, never boring. Some of the highlights for me:

1. Robert Harris was a little hammy, but quite good and interesting as the main character.

2. It was cool to see the werewolf and Frankenstein so often featured in Famous Monsters.

3. Morris Ankrum!!! He raises the level of any film he appears!

4. The song and dance was fun. As the trailer says, "where pretty girls parade their pulchritude"

5. The color ending with the cameos by It, She Creature and a Saucerman. Did they really burn them??? I think not, what do you say?

Had a blast, and enjoyed seeing some Bashers briefly at the Drive In. See you next week!

Really enjoyed this Saturday's movie! I watch How to Make a Monster at least twice a year. The makeup man getting fired and seeking revenge angle seems straight out of a 40s melodrama! It would have been interesting to see the whole film in color and maybe given more time to Clarke and Conway in monster makeup. The scenes with the Teenage Monsters at work come off best, but on the whole a really fun, fast moving and especially satisfying monster movie.

When I was a kid I never got to see this movie. It wasn't shown on any of the TV stations that we could get. But I knew about it because of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. I had seen a picture of Teenage Frankenstein and Werewolf standing beside each other and thought this might be a good movie to watch. It would be several years before I would get to see it. I bought it when the VHS copy came out and enjoyed it very much. Later on I got the DVD with the colorized ending.

I liked the story even though it didn't actually have supernatural monsters. Here the make-up man is the monster and is in full control of the teen actors. Robert H. Harris is good as the mad make-up man. He knew he was the best at his job and when it is taken away from him he decides to get revenge. Gary Clarke & Gary Conway are good as the teenage actors. Several other veteran actors help with the proceedings.  Great ending with a lot of AIP monster masks on the wall.

Just a thought - it would have been nice to include Sandra Harrison as the vampire from "Blood of Dracula" Then you would have AIP's trio of teenage monsters. This was a great movie to watch.
